This is an excellent recipe to prepare for a group. You’ll make cinnamon and nutmeg-flavored butter by hand. All you need is hot water and your favorite brand of golden rum to complete the drink.

What type of rum should I use?

Choose gold or dark rum to make this drink and avoid clear liquor. There is no discretion against any brand, so choose your favorite for the recipe. If you’re using spiced rum, just double-check you’ve selected a zero-carb pure rum. Keep it at room temperature so your buttered rum stays hot.

Can I use another type of liquor?

Interested in a buttered rum without the rum? Other gold or dark liquors can be substituted for rum and still be complemented by the butter.   • Step 1

    Leave butter at room temperature until it is softened. Add the butter to a small bowl and use the back of a fork to mash it. Keep mashing the butter until it’s lump-free and smooth so it melts easily in your hot drink. Add your brown sugar substitute, vanilla extract, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and salt to the bowl.

    Use your fork to blend the butter and spices together into a creamy butter ball. Place the cinnamon butter ball into the bottom of an 8 fl oz glass. Heat your water via microwave, electric kettle, or stovetop just until it’s hot or just below simmering. Pour the hot water over the butter in the glass, then pour your rum of choice into the glass as well.

    Stir the contents of the glass until the butter melts completely and emulsifies with the hot drink. You can garnish the buttered rum with an extra sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg. If you want the drink to be sweeter, add your favorite low-carb sweetener. Enjoy while hot!
